WatchCharts brand indexes are weighted price averages across model variants traded on the secondary market. Sub-collection here means a specific lineage within a brand — Submariner, Aquanaut, Speedmaster — rather than a single reference number.

The story everyone wrote about “the watch bubble” treated the whole market as one thing. It wasn’t. Sort by 5Y and three groups separate cleanly.
The popped ones are at the bottom: Rolex’s steel sport icons — Submariner, Sea-Dweller, GMT-Master. Five years on, they’re flat or down. The bubble in those models came from a real-but-finite scarcity premium that fully evaporated.
The persistent ones are at the top: Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and Aquanaut. They bubbled at least as hard, but the premium never came back out. Patek’s production volumes are an order of magnitude smaller than Rolex’s; with the 5711 discontinued, the Nautilus stopped being a watch and started being a Birkin.
The middle is the boring part — the rest of the watch market. Omega’s Speedmaster, the most iconic chronograph in history, returned about 3% over five years. It just did its job, like nothing happened. Patek’s Calatrava, Rolex’s Datejust, Omega’s Seamaster — all in the same low-single-digits-to-mid-teens band you’d expect from any mature category.
